Christmas with your Pets

Well everybody it is almost Christmas. Our pets are members of the family and we wouldn’t leave them out of the festivities, so here are a few events you might want to attend.

First are pictures with Santa at Petco and Petsmart locations in Austin to benefit local rescue organizations. Contact forgottenfriends.org or austincockerrescue.org for details. On December 5th is “Run Like The Wind” , a charity event benefiting the Schrodi Training Fund, overseen by Animal Trustees of Austin at The Lee Mannix Center for Canine Behavior, located at 6901 Old Bee Caves Road. It will include a 5K walk or run, with or without your dog, and distance runs from 3 hours to 24 hours, including relays. Visit http://schrodifund.org for more details.

Also on December 5th Homeslice will host the 4th annual Carnival-O-Pizza featuring live music, food, raffles and games such as pizza tossing, eating and box folding contests. Proceeds from the event will benefit Austin Pets Alive. Visit homeslicepizza.com for more info.

Last but not least is the Zilker Park Trail of Lights. This is a good opportunity to stroll along with your dog and enjoy the beautiful light displays. Dates and location have changed a bit this year. It is being held December 13-21 from 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm at the Zilker Tree, a 152-foot-tall tower strung with lights, and the Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theater, both located on the south side of Barton Springs Road. Visit statesman.com for more info.

We hope you all have a safe and happy holiday.

Whenever possible call in advance or on the way to your pet’s hospital. This will allow your veterinarian and staff to promptly and properly treat your pet. They will immediately begin monitoring his body temperature. Most patients are put on intravenous fluids to rehydrate the kidneys and major organs. Some patients also need oxygen therapy and treatment for respiratory disease. Blood samples are usually during the treatment to monitor organ function and clotting times. Treating heatstroke can be tricky and difficult; however, with the proper knowledge it can be managed.
